Short Simple and Sound Gospel Commentary for Dec 16. John 5:33-36
“These same works of mine testify that the Father has sent me.” The words of Christ explain that he did not rely on anybody’s testimony in order to be credible, not even the witness of John the Baptist. More than words, Jesus’ credibility would be backed up by his actions. These consisted not only of his miracles but also of all his other actions characterized by his deep charity and humanity.
In his well-known work The Way, St. Josemaria Escriva said, “Love means deeds, not sweet words.” (No. 933)  We must show our love for God by works of charity.  Hence, the ultimate test of love of God and love of neighbor is the wholehearted acceptance and carrying out of the will of God.  Let us fulfill our daily duties with a great spirit of service.  This is the way an ordinary Christian can best practice love of God and love of neighbor.
